“Open boundaries” are boundaries where particles can enter or leave the domain. This is in contrast to a fixed boundary such as a wall, or a periodic boundary where fluid exiting at one edge is carried over to the other side.
Typically, open boundaries employ a pressure or velocity boundary condition.
